Hendrik de Clercq (1776-1850)

Obituary of Mary Ledyard, Febr. 1869

DIED DECLERCQ - In Cazenovia, February 2, 1869. Mrs. Mary DeClercq, aged 88 years.

Another of our oldest and most respected inhabitants gone from our midst. Mrs. Mary Ledyard DeClercq, relict of Mr. Hendrik DeClercq, of this town, died Tuesday, February 2d, at the good old age of 88 years, regretted by all who knew her and most by those who were the most intimately acquainted with her. Her last illness was of short duration - three days - when “tired nature” quietly yielded to the all-destroyer. Her funeral was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends, who felt that they had lost a kind christian mother, neighbor, and friend. Mrs. DeClercq was at all times an exemplary and earnest christian, and, er mind being filled with bright anticipations of the future, she was ever joyous and cheerful, and was at all times the faithful monitor to point to duty, or admonitor to warn of error. She was the mother of ten children, five of whom, wih her husband, preceded her to the spirit land. Mrs. DeClercq was born at
Groton, in 1780, in the stirring times of te first American revolution and in one short year her father was killed in battle. At the age of 18, she came on horsback, from her native town to this place, to reside with her uncle, Gen. Forman, with whom she lived till her marriage to Mr. DeClercq, and for 70 years since has resided on the same farm. Thus our original landmarks are being removed.                                     AMICUS.
